Prisons Service Interdicts Chief Officer Over Alleged Attempt to Smuggle Indian Hemp

The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted Chief Officer No. 8566 Michael Osei-Bonsu after his arrest for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into Kete-Krachi Local Prison.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Department on June 23, the incident occurred on Friday, June 19, 2026, during routine security checks before the officer’s night shift.
Officers on duty detected and retrieved the suspected narcotic substance at the prison gate.
The officer was immediately handed over to the Kete-Krachi District Police for further investigations.
He was later arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate’s Court and remanded into custody for two weeks.
The case has been adjourned to July 8, 2026.
In line with service regulations, Chief Officer Osei-Bonsu has been interdicted pending the outcome of both criminal proceedings and internal disciplinary processes.
The Prison Service said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward drug-related offences and other contraband, including mobile phones.
It commended the officers whose alertness led to the detection and reiterated its commitment to upholding professionalism, integrity, discipline, and security.
“The Service will continue to collaborate closely with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that anyone found engaging in criminal activities is dealt with in accordance with the law,” the release stated.
