2026 World Cup: Ghana Hold England, Edge Closer to Knockout Qualification

Ghana took a significant step towards the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after battling to a goalless draw against England in their second Group L match at Gillette Stadium.

The Black Stars entered the game full of confidence following their 1-0 victory over Panama, while England were looking to build on their opening 4-2 win over Croatia.

As expected, the Three Lions controlled possession for much of the first half and pushed forward in search of an early breakthrough.

However, Ghana remained well-organised defensively, with Benjamin Asare and his backline standing firm against England’s attacking threats.

The pattern of the game continued after the break, with England creating the better opportunities and forcing Ghana to defend for long periods.

Bukayo Saka came closest to scoring when his effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who once again showed why he has been one of Ghana’s standout performers at the tournament.

England were denied again moments later when Nico O’Reilly’s powerful header struck the crossbar, allowing the Black Stars to escape and keep the score level.

The draw moves Ghana onto four points from two matches and extends their impressive defensive record, having yet to concede a goal at the tournament. The Black Stars will face Croatia in their final group game on June 27, while England take on Panama on the same day.
