President Akufo-Addo Revokes Ban On Football

The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has approved Premier League and Division One to resume on 30th October, 2020.

The declaration of the President in his 17th Address to the Nation on the measures taken to combat the spread of COVID-19 pandemic will give Asante Kotoko SC and Obuasi AshantiGold SC a perfect opportunity to start preparations ahead of their CAF inter-club competitions.

Speaking in a televised address on Sunday, August 20, 2020, the President said “with respect to football, after due consultations with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), it’s been decided that, the Ghana Premier League and the Division One League will restart on Friday, 30th October with the full regime of the testing of the players, technical and management staff.”

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), took a decision to cancel the 2019/20 football season following a marathon meeting on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at the GFA Secretariat in Accra.

Before the decision, the League season had been on suspension since March 16, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Executive Council at that meeting also decided that per the relevant provisions of the CAF inter-club football Regulations, Asante Kotoko SC and AshGold SC will represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup respectively.

Clubs in the league had already played either 14 or 15 games out of 34 rounds, with Aduna Stars in the lead by one point when the competition was suspended March this year.
