Adu Boahen, Wife Run to Court Over “Unlawful Incarceration”

Former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahen and Angela Adjei Boateng, his wife, have sued the Attorney-General and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The couple have run to court accusing the A-G and EOCO of unlawful incarceration.
The couple were arrested last week over alleged diversion and embezzlement of state funds and have their bail conditions set at GH¢120 million for Adu-Boahene and GH¢80 million for his wife.
The lawyers of the suspects argue that the bail conditions are excessive and appear to be an attempt to extend their clients’ detention beyond the legally allowed 48-hour period.
In an affidavit filed at the Human Rights Division of the High Court in Accra, the counsels contended, “The Respondents with a clear motive to incarcerate the Applicants beyond the 48-hour period as spelt out by the Constitution have imposed burdensome and unreasonable conditions on the Applicants as the precondition for their granting them bail.”
According to them, their detention is a clear violation of their clients’ right to liberty.
