The Familial Ties Between Daasebre Osei Bonsu II and Akufo-Addo

There exists a family bond between the late occupant of the Silver Stool, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, and Ghana’s former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The two first developed senior-junior relations on the campus of the University of Ghana, Legon but it was not until a decade later that their familial ties set off.

This was when Nana Akufo-Addo met the traditional ruler’s sister, Eleanor Obaa Akosua Saa Nkansa-Dwamena and the two fell in love and got married.

He thus became the brother-in-law of Daasebre.

The couple shared one child, Nana Dokua, who is the last of the former President’s children and holds royal ties to the Bretuo Stool of Botase.

The marriage came to an end when Eleanor passed away at the age of thirty-nine following an unfortunate illness.

From here, the relationship between the 81-year-old and the royal family transitioned into a professional one.

He acted as counsel for the predecessor of the late great Mamponghene, Nana Attakora Amaniampong, when a petition was brought against him by Tsatsu Tsikata, acting for the then Effiduasehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom, seeking his removal by the Supreme Court as Mamponghene.

“I took a preliminary objection to the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court in the matter, much to the amazement of many lawyers who were in Court on that day Supreme Court being the apex court of last resort in our judicial system.

“Happily for me, the objection was upheld by a unanimous panel of seven members of the Court in dismissing the petition. It has since become a leading case, what the lawyers call a locus classicus, in the proper invocation of the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction,” he recalled in his tribute.
