MoH, Noor Dubai Foundation Partner to Push Ghana’s Onchocerciasis Elimination by 2030

The Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Noor Dubai Foundation have formed a new partnership aimed at accelerating Ghana’s push to eliminate onchocerciasis by 2030, a move officials say will help sustain progress amid global funding constraints.
At a meeting with Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Chief Executive Officer of the Noor Dubai Foundation, Dr. Manal Taryam outlined ongoing and planned interventions.
She said the Foundation, which operates under the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, has been working in Ghana since 2009, focusing primarily on cataract surgeries in Tamale with a target of reaching up to 5,000 beneficiaries annually.
Dr Taryam disclosed that the Foundation is now expanding its scope beyond eye care to support the elimination of onchocerciasis, with personal backing from the Ruler of Dubai.
Hon. Akandoh directed technical teams to fast-track all processes related to the collaboration, stressing that timelines must be strictly adhered to in order to meet national elimination targets.
According to him, eliminating operational delays and strengthening coordination will be essential to achieving full coverage.
The Minister noted that Ghana’s progress in tackling neglected tropical diseases makes it a strong partner.
He expressed confidence that, with coordinated efforts and sustained will, the elimination of onchocerciasis is achievable by 2030.
