No National Service, No Job – NSA Reminds Employers and Graduates

The National Service Authority (NSA) has cautioned employers and graduates that completing national service is a compulsory requirement for employment.
In a statement announcing the released postings for 18,617 eligible Nurses and Midwives to enrol for the 2026/27 National Service Year, it highlighted Section 29(1) of the National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119).
According to the Authority, a person is qualified to undertake national service if that person is a Ghanaian citizen and has completed a course of study at a tertiary education institution, while drawing attention to the repercussions for non-compliance as outlined in Section 40 of Act 1119.
According to the law, an employer must not employ a person qualified to undertake national service but who has not done so, unless that person is exempted under Section 36.
Employers are required to ascertain from prospective employees whether they are required to undertake service and whether they have completed it, or provide an exemption certificate.
Per the law, any employer who contravenes the provision will be liable to pay an administrative penalty of five thousand penalty units to the Authority.
In addition, the Registrar of Companies shall not register the company, partnership or business name of a qualified person who has not undertaken service unless the person is exempted under Section 36.
“Management therefore encourages all prospective national service personnel to comply fully with the stated procedures and timelines to facilitate their successful deployment and commencement of national service.”
