Mayor Only Helped Traders Secure Cheaper Containers at Baba Yara- KMA Clarifies

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has dismissed claims that the Mayor of Kumasi awarded a container supply contract to a personal associate, describing the allegations as false.

In a statement issued to clarify issues surrounding the provision of containers for traders affected by the removal of unauthorised structures around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, KMA said the Mayor has no financial interest in the production or supply of the containers.

According to the Assembly, affected traders were asked to engage a qualified contractor to produce containers that meet the approved standards set for the area.

KMA explained that when concerns were raised about the cost of the containers, the Mayor intervened to help the traders secure a bulk discount in order to make them more affordable.

The Assembly stated that the intervention was solely to support the traders while ensuring order, safety, and proper planning around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium following the demolition exercise.

“KMA remains committed to transparency, orderly development, and building a better Kumasi for all,” the statement added.

The clarification comes after concerns were raised among some trader groups about the process for relocating those whose structures were removed from the stadium enclave.
