Over 300 Complaints Filed Against TV Stations for Rituals, Fake Lotteries, Porn

The National Media Commission (NMC) and the National Communication Authority (NCA) have received 318 complaints from the public over unacceptable content.

The complaints have been filed against television stations including Asomafo TV, Adwenpa TV, Eagle TV, Best TV, Energy TV, Diamond TV, X TV, Asomdwie TV, Funny TV, Advice TV, Big TV, Passion TV, Nkabom TV, Seekers TV and Elephant TV.

Per a statement by the duo, the complaints were received by an established complaint Centre through calls from the public on contents deemed unacceptable by media ethical standards, Ghanaian culture, tradition and norms.

It said the complaints were made up of 224 money-doubling incidents; 83 money rituals; 24 fake lotteries; 18 occultic practices and 13 incidents of pornography with the rest relating to fake loan schemes and people seeking to use fraudulent means to extract money from others.

Professional Assessment
It noted that its professional assessment faulted two media houses including Power FM and Onua TV whose broadcasts have been found to affect national cohesion.

It noted that the situation with Power FM which involved some derogatory remarks against the Second Lady, H.E Samira Bawumia and the Fulani community, has been resolved while that of Onua remains outstanding.

Earlier this week, the Commission accused Onua TV of using their platform for “inciteful” broadcast by their morning show host, Captain Smart.

Commendation
The Executive Director for Media Foundation for West Africa, Sulemana Braimah has commended the NMC and NCA for the initiative.

“Great to see the NMC in action.”

According to him, the actions of the earmarked media houses are inimical to the fight for press freedom.

“We will continue to support the NMC to ensure the highest journalistic standard as required of it by the constitution.”
