Gov’t Temporarily Removes GHC2.00 per litre on Diesel and GHC0.36 Per Litre on Petrol

The Government has temporarily scrapped the GHC2.00 per litre levy on diesel and the GHC0.36 per litre levy on petrol, a move aimed at easing fuel costs for consumers and transport operators amid global market volatility.
This will take effect in pump prices from April 16, 2026.
“This intervention is intended to cushion customers and ease the cost burden on households, transport operators, and businesses,” the Jubilee House said in a statement.
The measure, approved by the Cabinet, is in response to rising prices of petroleum products on the international market, which have significantly impacted ex-pump prices in Ghana.
This temporary intervention will remain in force for a period of one month, during which the government intends to closely monitor developments in the global oil market and assess the need for further policy adjustments.
“Government remains committed to maintaining price stability, protecting livelihoods, and supporting Ghana’s economic recovery in the face of external shocks.”
The amount exceeds the demand of IMANI Africa, COPEC Ghana, INSTEPR and IES, who proposed GHC1.65 deduction in taxes, margins and levies on petroleum products as part of temporary relief for Ghanaians for two months.
