Gov’t Announces Week-Long Activities to Mark One-Year Anniversary of August 6 Helicopter Disaster
Government has announced a week-long programme of activities to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished national patriots.
In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the Presidency said the activities will begin on Thursday, July 30, 2026, and end on Saturday, August 7, 2026.
The events are being organised by Government together with the Ministry of Defence, key stakeholders, and alumni groups to remember, honour, and pay tribute to the selflessness, service, and sacrifice of the ‘Departed 8’, and to stand in solidarity with their bereaved families.
The commemorations will begin on Thursday, July 30, 2026, with an official presentation of the State’s support to the families of the ‘Departed 8’.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the Dr Edward Omane Boamah Memorial Lecture will be held at Burma Hall, Burma Camp, Accra, at 2:00 PM.
The lecture is being organised by the Ministry of Defence and the old students of Pope John SHS, POJOBA, and the general public has been invited.
On Thursday, August 6, 2026, a National Inter-Faith Memorial Service will take place at the UPSA Auditorium in Madina, Accra, beginning at 8:30 am and will be attended by President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
Later that same day at 4:00 PM, the Ministry of Defence will hold an official unveiling of a memorial cenotaph, for which attendance is by invitation.
The week will conclude on Saturday, August 7, 2026, with the ‘Service to the Soul’ Nationwide Blood Donation Drive.
The humanitarian campaign aims to fill blood banks and save lives in memory of those who died. It will take place in all District, Regional, and Teaching Hospitals nationwide, at the 37 Military Hospital, and other locations to be announced.
Government called on all Ghanaians to visit the nearest health facility to donate blood as an appropriate and life-saving way to pay tribute to the fallen heroes.
The statement urged the general public, civil society organisations, religious bodies, media houses, and well-wishers to participate in the scheduled activities.
“The loss of these eight noble individuals remains a deeply painful chapter in our nation’s history. However, their spirit of dedication to duty must continue to inspire us as a people,” it said.
“Let us come together in unity, through prayer and with patriotic devotion, as we offer support to the families left behind and keep the memory of the deceased alive. May the souls of the Departed Eight continue to rest in perfect peace.”
