GHS Interdicts Staff, Sets Up Probe Committee Over Missing Newborn at Salaga Hospital

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has interdicted staff linked to the disappearance of a newborn at the East Gonja Municipal Hospital in Salaga and has constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the incident.

The update, issued by the Savannah Regional Health Directorate, follows a June 11 press release on the “unfortunate incident” and outlines steps taken so far to locate the baby and prevent a recurrence.

The Directorate said the staff responsible for the baby’s care before her disappearance have been arraigned before the Tamale High Court and are facing criminal proceedings.

In line with the GHS Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures, the staff have been interdicted pending the outcome of the case.

To establish the facts around the incident, the Regional Director of Health Services has set up a seven-member investigation committee.

The committee will probe the circumstances surrounding the loss of the baby, recommend disciplinary action where necessary, and propose corrective measures to strengthen safety and accountability across GHS facilities.

The search for the baby is ongoing as the Regional Health Directorate said it continues to work closely with the Ghana Police Service and has renewed its appeal to the public to share any information with the nearest police station, the SRHD, or the East Gonja Municipal Hospital.

All information will be treated with confidentiality, as the Directorate has also instructed all hospitals, child welfare clinics, and Community Health Officers nationwide to remain alert for any mother-baby pair whose circumstances appear suspicious and to report immediately to the nearest police station for investigation.

Psychological support has been arranged for the baby’s parents as they deal with the trauma.

The GHS reaffirmed its commitment to providing timely, high-quality, and comprehensive healthcare while upholding the highest standards of safety in all its facilities.

The Regional Health Directorate and security services said they will keep the public informed as investigations progress, and extended deepest sympathies to the baby’s parents and family during this difficult period.
