Ghana Secures Lifting of Egg Export Ban to Burkina Faso

Ghana has secured the lifting of restrictions on egg exports to Burkina Faso and on tomato imports from the country, in a move expected to boost bilateral trade between the two neighbours.

The breakthrough was achieved following urgent talks in Ouagadougou on Friday, July 17, led by Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, and Hon. Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture.

In a joint statement, the two Ministries assured Ghanaian businesses, especially poultry and egg exporters as well as tomato importers, that the engagement produced “concrete, positive outcomes.”

“The Government of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama remains fully committed to protecting the interests of Ghanaian traders and producers,” the statement said.

It would be recalled that Burkinabe authorities recently imposed restrictions on egg exports from Ghana, particularly those from Dormaa.

The measure was a precautionary response to quality concerns in some exporting countries.

Both sides also agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee to ensure smooth bilateral trade and to address any future issues urgently.

The two countries further agreed to negotiate a Bilateral Trade Agreement aimed at strengthening trade relations, reducing barriers, and improving market access for goods and services.

The Burkina trade corridor continues to grow rapidly. Ghana’s exports to Burkina Faso increased from US$573 million in 2024 to US$637 million in 2025.

The Ghanaian delegation included H.E. Sem Kenneth Akibate, Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, embassy officials, technical staff from the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, and private sector representatives.

They also included Dr Ernest Appiah, Managing Director of Agricultural Manufacturing Group (AMG), AMG’s Burkina Representative, and Sylvester Asante, Chairman of the Dormaa Egg Exporters Association.
