NHIA Sensitises Members on Right to Collect Prescribed Medicines from Credentialed Pharmacies
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has educated members on their right to access prescribed medication even when it is not available at the hospital or clinic where they receive treatment.
In a public sensitisation titled “Know Your Rights as an NHIS Member”, the Authority explained that patients are entitled to obtain a prescription and collect their medication from any credentialed pharmacy or licensed chemical shop.
“If a medicine prescribed for you is not available at the hospital or clinic, you have the right to get a prescription and collect from a credentialed pharmacy or chemical shop,” the NHIS stated.
The Scheme added that where a credentialed pharmacy, either within a hospital or as a stand-alone outlet, does not have the prescribed medication in stock, it can upload the prescription to the E-pharmacy platform.
The system will then direct the patient to a nearby pharmacy or licensed chemical outlet in their community to collect the medication.
The reminder forms part of NHIS’s ongoing efforts to ensure members fully understand and benefit from their healthcare coverage under the scheme.
NHIS also urged members to take advantage of its digital services for convenience.
It noted that members can renew and link their NHIS card to the Ghana Card by dialling *929# or through the MyNHIS App available for download on Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
