Ghana Library Authority Engages Amoakohene on Library Infrastructure and Open Field Initiative

The Board Chair of the Ghana Library Authority, Dr. Michael Ato Essuman, together with the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, paid a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Minister yesterday to discuss ways of improving library infrastructure and management across the region.

The meeting centred on strengthening the capacity of public libraries in the Ashanti Region to better serve students, researchers, and the wider community.

Both parties emphasised the need for modernized facilities, improved resource allocation, and enhanced administrative systems to make libraries more accessible and relevant in the digital age.

Dr. Essuman noted that robust library infrastructure remains critical to promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and knowledge development in the region.

He said the Authority is committed to working closely with regional authorities to upgrade existing facilities and ensure efficient management of library services.

A key part of the discussions was sustaining the Open Field Library Initiative, a novel programme introduced during AshantiFest 2026.

The initiative, which sets up open-air libraries in public spaces during the cultural festival, has been hailed as an innovative approach to bringing books and learning resources closer to communities.

Both the Ghana Library Authority and the Regional Coordinating Council expressed interest in expanding the Open Library initiative beyond the festival period, with proposals to integrate it into broader regional literacy and outreach programme.

Meanwhile, The Ashanti Regional Minister welcomed the engagement, describing libraries as vital institutions for education and civic empowerment.

He pledged the region’s support in creating an enabling environment for the Authority’s programmes to thrive.
