U/ER: 3 Arrested Over Chief Attack That Claimed One Life

The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of Iddrisu Sumaila and an attack on Sambin Halidu, the elected chief of the Tindorunga community under Worinyanga in the Tempane District.

Police said a team from the Regional Command moved to Garu on May 26, 2026, at about 6:00 a.m. to assist the district command in apprehending those linked to the incident.

The suspects arrested are Majeed Bawumya, 34 years, Milla Justice, 27 years, and Majeed Awudu, 20 years.

A search at the residence of Majeed Bawumya Agbango, alias Atan Majeed, led to the retrieval of one BRUNI MOD 92 Cal. 8mmK pistol, several sharp objects, GH¢600 in cash, and three mobile phones believed to be connected to the crime.

Preliminary investigations show the attack was triggered by a chieftaincy dispute.

It reported that the kingmakers of Worinyanga presented three candidates, including Sambin Halidu, to the overlord of Bawku, Naba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azorka II, for vetting and possible enskinment as chief of Tindorunga about a month ago.

Members of an opposing faction, including suspect Majeed Bawumya Agbango, allegedly protested the election of Sambin Halidu and threatened to disrupt the enskinment ceremony scheduled for May 26, 2026.

Police say that on May 25, 2026, suspect Alhassan Sabrina and other accomplices currently at large met at the residence of Majeed Bawumya Agbango in Worinyanga, where they allegedly hatched plans to disrupt the ceremony.

Early the next morning, at about 3:00 a.m., while Sambin Halidu and his family were preparing for the enskinment, the armed suspects reportedly stormed the house, fired indiscriminately and set ablaze Sambin Halidu’s 4×4 Mitsubishi vehicle with registration GE 1115-13.

Several persons sustained injuries in the attack, while Iddrisu Sumaila, who suffered gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Upper East Regional Police Command said investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices, including Alhassan Sabrina, as it works to maintain peace in the area ahead of the chieftaincy process.
