Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander Deposed Over Islamic SHS Clash

The Inspector-General of Police, George Akufo Dapare has deposed the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwasi Akomea-Apraku for poorly handling the Islamic Senior High School students who took to the streets to protest on June 13, 2022.

The deputy regional commander until he was deposed, was acting as the Regional Commander.

Two other officers, including the Regional Operations Officer, ACP George Ankomah, and the Suame Divisional Commander, ACP Alex Cudjoe Acquah have as well been interdicted.

The three, according to the police service, have been interdicted to make way for investigations.

Their suspension comes after preliminary investigations revealed that the police responded to the protesting students by using “pepper spray and warning shots in an attempt to disperse them”.

The police say that “even though nobody was hit by the bullet, the police handling of the incident was poor and fell short of our standard operating procedure on the crowd control”.

The Police Professionals Standard Bureau (PPSB) on the other hand has commenced a full-scale investigation into the conduct of the three police officers.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says clinical psychologists have been deployed to the school to offer psychological support to the student body.
