Ghana Announces Power Outages As Atuabo Gas Plant Shuts

The Ministry of Energy has officially announced parts of the country will be experiencing intermittent power outages dubbed “dum sie sie” to wit, “shutdown for maintenance”.

This has been attributed to the shutdown of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant by the Ghana Gas Company Limited to make way for a maintenance programme.

The maintenance programme which began on March 25 will last for 14 days and will ensure the reliability of the gas processing plant and transmission infrastructure after completion, the Ministry said in a statement dated March 29.

“The shutdown will affect gas supply to some power plants and will ultimately result in interruption of power supply to some consumers”, it said.

This explains the recent power outages some parts of the country have been experiencing recently.

In order to minimise the outages, the Ministry said, the government is in the process of procuring gas from other sources to complement the available domestic gas for power generation.

Meanwhile, a timetable to guide consumers on the outages will be released by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) soon, the statement noted.
