Former Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris, has praised the Black Stars for reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana booked their place in the Round of 32 after finishing third in Group L. The Black Stars opened their campaign with a narrow win over Panama, shared the spoils with England, and later suffered a defeat against Croatia in their final group match, finishing with four points.
It marks their first World Cup knockout stage appearance in 16 years.
Speaking in an interview with TV3 after qualification was confirmed, Waris who was a member of Ghana’s 2014 World Cup squad expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress while calling for improvement.
“It’s been really good, especially Ghana going through the group stage, something everyone was hoping for Ghana, and they’ve done it, and I think that is the most important thing,” he said.
“The only thing is that we just have to learn from our mistakes from the Croatia game. We changed a bit against Croatia and just have to learn from it, and then we can progress.”
Waris’s comments come as Ghana prepare to face Colombia in the Round of 32 on Saturday, July 4.
The former Porto, Strasbourg, and Nantes striker’s words reflect the optimism and constructive mindset within the Ghanaian football community as the Black Stars aim to go further in the tournament.
