France and Senegal produced a highly entertaining 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage encounter at MetLife Stadium, with the European giants eventually running out 3-1 winners.
The first half was goalless but full of intensity, attacking play, and near misses from both sides, setting the stage for a dramatic second half.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute when Kylian Mbappe struck first for France. The superstar forward found the net with a clinical close-range finish, giving Les Bleus a deserved lead after sustained pressure.
Sixteen minutes later, the Blues doubled their advantage. Bradley Barcola finished off a fine move, slotting home after an excellent assist from Adrien Rabiot.
At 2-0, France appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable victory. However, Senegal refused to give up as substitute Ibrahim Mbappe pulled one back for the Teranga Lions with a late strike, sparking brief hope of a comeback into the closing moments.
The celebrations were short-lived. Just seconds after Senegal’s goal, Kylian Mbappe restored France’s two-goal cushion with a stunning long-range strike from way out. The spectacular finish sealed the 3-1 win and showcased Mbappe’s world-class quality on the big stage.
The result leaves France in a strong position in the group while Senegal will need to regroup quickly. Les Bleus will next face Iraq on June 22 at Lincoln Financial Field, while Senegal take on Norway on June 23 at MetLife Stadium.
