Who is Eric Tinkler? Meet Asante Kotoko’s New Head Coach

Asante Kotoko have handed the responsibility of leading the club into a new era to experienced South African-Portuguese tactician Eric Tinkler, a coach with more than three decades of experience in elite football as both a player and manager.

The 55-year-old joins the Porcupine Warriors with an impressive football résumé, having enjoyed success at the highest level in South Africa and Europe. A CAF A Licence holder, Tinkler is widely respected for his tactical knowledge, leadership qualities and ability to build competitive teams.

Before moving into coaching, Tinkler carved out an outstanding playing career. The Portuguese-South African was captain of the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, and represented clubs including Wits University, União de Tomar in Portugal, Italian Serie A side Cagliari, English club Barnsley and Bidvest Wits.

Following his retirement, he quickly established himself as one of South Africa’s most experienced coaches. He has managed some of the country’s biggest clubs, including Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Chippa United, Sekhukhune United and Bidvest Wits.

His coaching career has been highlighted by a runner-up finish in the CAF Champions League with Orlando Pirates and another second-place finish in the CAF Confederation Cup with SuperSport United. He has also won domestic honours, including the MTN 8 title and the Telkom Knockout Cup, while consistently guiding clubs to competitive finishes in the South African top flight.

Tinkler now arrives in Kumasi with the task of restoring Asante Kotoko to the summit of Ghanaian football. The record Ghana Premier League champions endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign, finishing eighth with 49 points, and will look to the experienced South African to lead their push for a first league title since 2022.

His appointment marks the beginning of a fresh chapter for the Porcupine Warriors, with supporters hoping his vast experience, winning mentality and continental pedigree will help return the club to domestic dominance while laying the foundation for success on the African stage.
