Asantehene Constitutes Committee to Probe Hwediem Stool Dispute

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has set up a four-member committee to investigate the dispute over the Hwediem stool.

The committee comprises the paramount chiefs of Kumawu, Tuobodom, and Sankore, with Otumfuo’s linguist, Kyeame Bonsu, serving as its linguist.

The case was referred to them during the Asanteman Council meeting on May 25, 2026.

Dispute
The Council, presided over by Otumfuo, was informed that one Yaw Dwomoh had laid claim to the Hwediem stool and challenged the royalty of the incumbent Queen by invoking the Great Oath.

Dwomoh argued that the stool belongs to the Ekuona clan and not the Asona clan, as has long been the case.

However, the Queen, also invoking the Great Oath, maintained that the stool is the property of the Asona clan.

Committee Mandate
Otumfuo charged the committee to establish the true origin of the stool and the lineage of the woman for whom it was created.

Pending the outcome, he urged all parties to maintain peace and exercise restraint.

“Until the case is settled, I don’t want any form of violence,” the Asantehene said.
