I Will Accelerate Road Construction in Ashanti Region- Finance Minister

The Minister for Finance, Hon Mohammed Amin Adam has committed himself to releasing funds to accelerate the completion of various roads under construction in the Ashanti Region in the course of his limited tenure.

He made this known to the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during a courtesy call on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

Accompanying the Minister to the Palace were Deputy Finance Minister John Ampontuah Kumah, Chief Director Eva Eselba Mends, Director of Economic Strategy and Research Alhassan Iddrisu, Director of Policy Coordination Monitoring and Evaluation Division Augustus Kwesi Adu and others.

In his address, the successor to Ken Ofori Atta stressed the need to give the Ashanti Region the fair share of development it deserves amongst all the sixteen regions.

“Ashanti Region is a very important region in our country with natural resource endowment which through its contribution to revenue and economic growth has brought us this far. We cannot forget that and this is why it is important to reciprocate by ensuring that the development the people so much desire is brought to the doorsteps of the people.”

It is in this spirit, he aims to bring life to all stalled road projects in the region.

“So many projects are ongoing across the region, particularly for roads. The Minister for Finance has made a lot of payments to contractors and I want to assure you we will continue and even accelerate it so that the many road contractors working across the region are able to speed up.”

On November 15, 2023, when Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah made an appearance before the Regional House of Chiefs, he attributed the cause of stalled projects to lack of funds.

“Many roads have been awarded on contracts but lack of finance for Interim Payment Certificate has led to their abandonment,” he said while addressing the house on road infrastructures.

Last week, the Ministry of Roads and Highways announced the release of GHC150 million for the rehabilitation of roads across the country.
