Bawku Conflict: Govt Now Adopts Peace Enforcement Approach

The government of Ghana has decided to employ a new strategy to maintain law and order in Bawku to augment the ongoing conflict resolution process.

Instead of peacekeeping, the government now intends to adopt a peace enforcement approach in the town and other affected areas.

As such, personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have been deployed to maintain law and order, while curfews intensify to ensure public safety, it said in a statement issued on Sunday.

“We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property.”

It therefore urged residents to fully cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure peace.

“While regretting the inconvenience this peace enforcement intervention may cause to peace-loving people within the affected areas, the Government of Ghana remains committed to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and other affected areas and is taking every necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of all residents, including students.”

This comes after two people were shot and killed in the Ashanti Region last week by unknown assailants. The crimes are believed to have links with the Bawku conflict.

In its statement, the government explained the mediation process led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, had almost brought finality to the conflict until the very recent killings which have necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good.
