Swedish Referee Glenn Nyberg to Officiate Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Opener Against Panama on Wednesday

Swedish center-man Glenn Nyberg has been appointed as the official referee for the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup Group L game between Ghana and Panama on Wednesday, June 17.

The 37-year-old official will be assisted on the lines by his countrymen Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Söderkvist, who have both been named as assistant referees for the game. Saudi Arabia’s Khalid Alturais will complete the officiating team as the fourth official.

The match is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada.
Both nations will be hoping for an explosive start to their tournament campaigns as they kick off Group L action.

Ghana, aiming to make a strong impression after qualifying for the expanded World Cup, will face a Panama side equally determined to spring a surprise on the global stage.

With the eyes of the football world on Toronto, Nyberg’s experienced European crew will be expected to deliver a fair and high-standard performance in what promises to be a tense and competitive opening fixture.
