Ghana Opens Doors for Thai Investment in Palm Oil and Agriculture

Ghana is courting Thai investment in agriculture, with palm oil identified as a key area for partnership.

The move follows a courtesy call on Monday by a high-level delegation from the Kingdom of Thailand to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Accra.

This followed a reception for a delegation led by H.E. Mrs Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs at Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Dumelo.

Discussions centred on strengthening Ghana–Thailand agricultural cooperation, with emphasis on food security, sustainable farming, agribusiness investment, and public-private partnerships.

A major highlight was Thai investors’ interest in Ghana’s palm oil sector. The delegation explored opportunities to establish palm plantations and processing facilities to meet growing industry demand.

Dumelo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to an enabling environment for agricultural investment.

He assured the delegation of the Ministry’s support in facilitating access to suitable land and pointed to the Oti, Ashanti and Ahafo Regions as areas with strong potential for palm cultivation.

The Deputy Minister also urged collaboration with local farmers and investments that drive value addition, job creation, and higher productivity across the palm oil value chain.

He outlined available incentives, including possible tax concessions on imported agricultural equipment and support through relevant government agencies.

Both sides expressed optimism about deeper cooperation and agreed to continue engagements to advance agricultural development, trade and investment for mutual benefit.

The Thai delegation is in Ghana from June 13 to 19, 2026.

It includes H.E. Mr Thirapath Mongkolnavin, Ambassador of Thailand to Nigeria and concurrently accredited to Ghana, officials from Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja, Thai businesses, financial institutions, and members of the Thai Community Ghana LBG.
