Steel Bender Remanded for Alleged Machete Attack Over Girlfriend Dispute

A 52-year-old steel bender, Kojo Senagbe, has been remanded into police custody after allegedly attacking a carpenter with a machete in what is believed to be a dispute over a romantic relationship.

Senagbe, who has pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing unlawful harm, appeared before the Amasaman Circuit Court presided over by Mr. Kwabena Obiri Yeboah.

The court has adjourned the case to June 6, 2025, to allow prosecutors time to submit their disclosures.

Chief Inspector Belinda Asante, who is leading the prosecution, identified the victim as 42-year-old Oliver Zinto, a carpenter. Both men live in the Community 14 Annexe area of Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region.

The prosecution told the court that the incident occurred on the night of May 10, 2025, at about 10:30 p.m., when Zinto was walking home.

He was reportedly confronted by Senagbe, who ordered him to stop. Zinto, sensing a potential threat, ignored the command and continued on his way.

Senagbe allegedly responded by launching a violent attack with a machete, slashing Zinto on the scalp, left ear, arm, and back. Despite his injuries, Zinto managed to struggle with the attacker and eventually wrestled the weapon away from him.

Bystanders who arrived at the scene provided Zinto with first aid before taking further steps to report the matter to the Klagon Police. Zinto was issued a medical form and sought treatment at a nearby facility.

Following investigations, Senagbe was arrested on May 12, 2025. In a caution statement given in the presence of an independent witness, he is said to have admitted to the assault, claiming he acted out of rage over suspicions that Zinto was romantically involved with his girlfriend.

Police have since retrieved the machete used in the attack as part of their evidence. Senagbe remains in custody pending the next hearing.
