21-Year-Old Jailed for Stealing Toyota Corolla in Amasaman

A 21-year-old man, Baba Hardi, has been handed a five-year prison sentence with hard labour by the Amasaman Circuit Court after admitting to stealing a Toyota Corolla S valued at GH¢140,000.

Hardi, who is unemployed and resides in Achiaman near Amasaman, was convicted on charges of unlawful entry and theft after pleading guilty before the court, which is overseen by High Court judge Justice Enid Marful-Sau, sitting with additional responsibility.

According to the case facts presented by Police Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 8, 2025.

The victim, Emmanuel Gideon Debrah, an IT specialist living behind the railway line at Amasaman, discovered around 5:30 a.m. that someone had broken into his room by tearing the mesh of his window.

A pair of trousers containing his car keys and GH¢150 in cash had been stolen. Upon further inspection, Mr. Debrah realised that his ash-coloured Toyota Corolla S, with registration number GT 3044-22, had also been taken from where it was parked outside.

He promptly reported the matter to the Amasaman Police, who issued an alert for the stolen vehicle. Later that same day, officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate at the National Headquarters in Accra intercepted Baba Hardi at Kwame Nkrumah Circle while he was in possession of the missing vehicle and a pair of scissors.

Investigations revealed that Hardi had been attempting to sell the car before he was caught. He was transferred back to Amasaman, where he confessed to the crime during police questioning.

Following further investigations, he was formally charged and brought before the court, which delivered its verdict and sentence.
