Ghana Airports Company Introduces “Name and Shame” Policy to Curb Extortion at Airports

The Ghana Airports Company Limited has announced new measures to eliminate extortion and the unacceptable practice of begging at all GACL-operated airports, following a high-level stakeholder facilitation meeting held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

According to a press release signed by GACL Management and all Airport Stakeholders, and issued on August 5, 2026, the meeting was convened to discuss steps to eradicate conduct that tarnishes the reputation of Ghana’s airports.

As part of the agreed measures, a “mystery shopping” initiative will be instituted. In addition, individuals found culpable of extortion will be publicly identified through appropriate media channels in what stakeholders described as a “name and shame” approach intended to discourage such conduct and reinforce accountability among all personnel operating at the airports.

The company stated that staff found guilty of the practice will face disciplinary action and will no longer be permitted to work in any airport or within its environs.

To make it easier for travellers to report incidents, management has also provided a dedicated hotline on 0542175636, which can be used for calls, WhatsApp messages, or SMS.

The hotline will receive reports of any act of extortion by personnel from agencies and service providers operating within airport terminals.

These include the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Revenue Authority Customs Division, Ghana Airports Company Limited, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Airport Clinic Limited, Air Commerce Forex Bureau, Ghana Police Service, Bureau of National Intelligence, National Security, Plant Quarantine, Meet and Assist Services, Janitorial Services, Waste Management Services, Airlines, Ground Handling Companies, Profilers, Port Health, Veterinary Services, Narcotics Control Commission, Car Park Operators and Attendants, Concessionaires including shops and restaurants, and Private Security Companies.

The statement indicated that reports should include the date and time of the incident, the name of the officer, the agency involved, and the location of the incident.

GACL further reminded passengers that they have the right to request the Airport Identification Card of any person purporting to represent an agency within the airport in order to verify the individual’s identity.

Passengers are also encouraged to obtain receipts for any payment made at the airport and, in case of doubt, to report the matter through the dedicated hotline.
