Security Forces Raid Chairman Wontumi’s Residence Amid Mining Probe Tensions

A surprise joint operation by National Security and police personnel unfolded at the residence of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Friday morning, May 23, 2025.

The team, reportedly made up of 23 armed officers—some in masks—arrived around 9:00 a.m. while Wontumi, his wife, and a domestic assistant were at home.

The sudden action raised tension in the area, particularly among members of the ruling party.

While the reason for the raid remains unclear, it comes in the wake of a recent police invitation to Chairman Wontumi to assist in ongoing investigations concerning the Akonta mining issue.

The summons, delivered to his media outlet in Kumasi, requested that he present himself in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025.

Despite prior indications that he intended to comply with the request, earlier communication from the Ashanti Regional Police had also proposed a meeting on Wednesday, May 21. Reports suggest that this meeting did not take place, leaving party insiders surprised by the unexpected show of force.

Following discussions at the scene, the majority of the officers eventually departed, though six remained behind. The development led to heightened concern among NPP members, some of whom visited the residence in response.

This incident follows the earlier arrest of party member Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, further fueling speculation and unrest within party ranks.
