SLTF, CAGD Finalise Modalities for Statutory Student Loan Deductions

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) have finalised modalities for recognising student loan repayments as a statutory deduction for employees on the government payroll.

According to SLTF CEO Dr Saajida Shiraz, a meeting with the CAGD on June 24, 2026, was an opportunity for the Fund to thank the Controller and Accountant-General and his team for supporting measures aimed at securing the long-term financial sustainability of the Fund.

Dr Shiraz said SLTF has been pursuing the recognition of student loans as a priority deduction for some time.

She noted it took months of background work by Team SLTF, several inter-institutional engagements, and the support of the Department’s leadership for the policy to now be close to actualisation.

With the Fund marking 20 years of financing tertiary education, Dr Shiraz said SLTF is “resetting for sustainability” by pursuing similar collaborations with the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Registrar-General’s Department, and SSNIT.

The move is expected to improve loan recovery rates and reduce default.

“We continue to count on the support of the public to build an enduring Trust Fund for generations of Ghanaian citizens seeking an immersive tertiary education experience free from the stress of financial constraints,” she stated.

Once implemented, the statutory deduction arrangement will allow loan repayments to be made directly at source from the salaries of government workers who are beneficiaries of the Fund.
