Public Urged to Disregard Purported 20% Fare Increment

The Executives of Road Transport Operators have distanced themselves from media reports of a purported 20% upward adjustment in public transport fares effective Monday, June 2, 2026, describing the announcement as illegal.

In a statement, the executives said they have not engaged the Ministry of Transport on any fare adjustment.

They noted that the decision by the supposed group did not go through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry and Road Transport Operators.

“We wish to inform the general public that the Executives of the Road Transport Operators have not engaged the Ministry in any transport fare upward adjustment. The decision by the supposed group is illegal as it has not gone through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Operators,” the statement read.

The executives condemned the decision in no uncertain terms and asked the general public to disregard the publication with the contempt it deserves.

All road transport operators, unions, associations, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers, and allied stakeholders have been directed to maintain the existing approved fares.

They have also been asked to refrain from implementing any unilateral fare adjustments until further notice.

The group said it is monitoring the next pricing window. Should there be any need for fare adjustment, the public will be duly notified through the proper channels.

“We remain committed to prioritising the interests of both our drivers and commuters and will continue to work diligently toward safeguarding their welfare,” the executives added.

Commuters are therefore advised to continue paying the current approved fares from Monday, June 2, 2026.
