Vigilance Needed To Tame Inflation- Govt Statistician

The Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, has cautioned against complacency after Ghana recorded its fifth consecutive drop in inflation.

According to him, there is a need for vigilance to tame the figures.

“The sustained drop is a positive signal of moderating inflationary pressures. However, a month-on-month increase to 0.8%, following the 0.2% in March, suggests that vigilance is still required to tame inflation.

He suggested that the overall outlook is cautiously optimistic, with opportunities to consolidate gains and enhance economic resilience.

Data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) suggests that the year-on-year Consumer Price Index (CPI) for April 2025 is 21.2%.

The slowdown in inflation is attributed to being largely driven by a moderation in both food and Non-food prices.

Per GSS figures, Food Inflation stands at 25% while Non-Food Inflation is 17%. Inflation for locally produced goods is 22.7% while imported goods stand at 17.7%.

Regionally, the GSS indicated that the Upper West Region recorded the highest inflation in April 2025 at 37.1%, with the Volta Region registering the lowest inflation at 18.3%.

“The data on inflation, whether on food or non-food, local or imported goods, show that efforts to stabilise prices are showing some results, but continued attention is needed on food Inflation and regional disparities,” the Government Statistician opined.

He further identified food inflation as the biggest price driver in addition to alcohol, beverages, tobacco and narcotics; recreation, sports and culture; and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel.
