NDC Opposes Widow of Late Ayawaso East MP’s Request for Virtual Vetting

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected a request by Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East Constituency, Nasser Toure Mahama, to participate in the party’s vetting process virtually.

The Deputy Director of Elections for the Party, Rashid Tanko, in a media interview justified the rejection, saying that the privilege is reserved for persons out of the country.

“The letter came, we discussed it thoroughly and compared it to our previous activities. Our position has been very clear; it is only a candidate who is outside this country and finds it extremely difficult to come down to participate in vetting. All candidates in the country are denied such a privilege. We have never done it before,” he said on TV3’s Ghana Tonight.

The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) fears that granting this request would present an opportunity for abuse.

“We don’t want to create another precedent that others can rely on and say the Functional Executive has varied its decisions. Therefore, I can also apply for the opportunity to do virtual vetting,” he added.

The widow wrote to the party seeking a virtual vetting to enable her complete her widowhood rites.

Five have expressed interest in vying to represent the NDC in the by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.

The Primary will take place on February 7, 2026, after a vetting on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
