Ghana Foreign Ministry Advises Travellers On Sierra Leone’s New Health Declaration Rule

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has informed the travelling public of a new mandatory health declaration requirement introduced by the Government of Sierra Leone for all persons entering or departing that country effective June 18, 2026.

In a statement, the Ministry said the directive from Sierra Leonean public health authorities applies to all travellers, including Ghanaian citizens travelling to Sierra Leone, foreign nationals, residents returning to Sierra Leone and visitors entering or departing the country.

Ghanaian citizens planning to travel to Sierra Leone have therefore been advised to comply with the requirements to ensure a smooth journey. All travellers are required to access the Sierra Leone Health Travel Portal at https://poep.npha.gov.sl and register to complete the Health Declaration Form within 72 hours before travel.

They must also ensure that their correct and updated seat number is entered into the system before departure and retain the confirmation QR Code or Reference Number generated after submission for presentation to relevant authorities when requested during travel.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted Sierra Leonean authorities as cautioning that providing false, inaccurate, or misleading information may result in delays, denial of entry or departure clearance, or additional health screening procedures.

Anyone feeling unwell before, during or after travel should immediately report to a Point of Entry Health Officer and seek medical attention.

The statement further noted that information provided through the portal will be used to support disease surveillance, prevention, and public health security measures, and will be handled confidentially in accordance with applicable data protection requirements.

Upon arrival in Sierra Leone, travellers may be subject to health screening and other public health measures as deemed necessary by authorities, and are expected to cooperate fully with health officials and other relevant authorities throughout their journey.

The Ministry added that travellers experiencing difficulties registering or completing the Health Declaration Form may seek assistance from designated Point of Entry Health personnel at official entry and exit points in Sierra Leone.

The travelling public has been encouraged to complete the required online health declaration before departure to avoid delays and ensure compliance with Sierra Leone’s public health regulations.

The Ministry stated that early registration and accurate submission of information will contribute to safer and more efficient travel while supporting regional and global public health security efforts.
