It’s Time to Prove Ourselves Once Again – Semenyo on 2026 World Cup

English-born Ghanaian striker, Antoine Selorm Semenyo continues to make waves in the Premier League but believes it’s time for the Black Stars to restore its glory at the world stage.

The four-time African champions will be making their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup (2006, 2010, 2014, 2022 & 2026) and are desperate to match up their own standards in the upcoming edition.

Ghana’s first appearance in Germany 2006 was one many football fans across the globe never anticipated to be this great having managed to advance from a tough group that comprised of eventual champions Italy, USA and then world number 2 on FIFA ranking Czech Republic but unfortunately ended their journey in the round of 16 where they lost 3-0 to a star-studded Brazil.

It was even better in 2010 in South Africa where Ghana became the third African nation to reach the quarter-final stage and came very close to becoming the first to cruise into semi-final but missed out narrowly in a very painful manner after a defeat to Uruguay via penalty shootouts.

The performances at the 2014 and 2022 editions in Brazil and Qatar respectively, isn’t something to be so much proud of judging from our earlier performances at the ‘Coppa Mundial’ having suffered a group stage evictions in all those.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on CBS Sport, the Manchester City attacker reiterated that this is the time Ghana will have to secure its glory once again and prove to the world they are capable of butting heads against the best.

“If I score for Ghana against England at the World Cup, I will probably dance with the whole team. We want to show people around the world that Ghana is one of the top nations and we can compete with the best.

“There’s been a bit of small talk [with English players], but as Ghanaians, we know it’s going to be a bit of a challenge. They are a star-studded team. They have so many top-class players, but we believe in ourselves”, he concluded

The 26-year-old is currently in the form of his life and has already surpassed his 11-goal mark last season in the Premier League. Currently on twelve, he’s tied-up on legendary Tony Yeboah and Andre Ayew and needs just a goal to become Ghana’s highest scorer in a single English Premier League campaign

Antoine Semenyo is one of the few untouchables in the Black Stars at the moment and will undoubtedly make coach Otto Addo’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup if hopefully he doesn’t encounter any injury from now till the end of the season.

The Black Stars will regroup for the first time this year in the March international break to take on Germany and Austria in pre-World Cup friendlies.
