Otumfuo Roots Ghanaian Culture in Canada with Opening of Ghana Sports Village

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has planted Ghanaian culture in Toronto after officially opening the Ghana Sports Village — a fan zone and cultural hub set up at Sankofa Square for celebrations.
His Majesty inaugurated it on June 17, 2026, ahead of the Black Stars’ opening World Cup game against Panama in Toronto.
As guest of honour, His Majesty was joined by revered Asante chiefs, government officials and other dignitaries.
Among them were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs James Gyakye Quayson, Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana H.E. Myriam Montrat, 2024 Vice Presidential Candidate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, MP for Okaikwei Central Patrick Yaw Boamah, members of the Asante Kotoko Board and others.
Pro-Asante groups from Toronto, Montreal, Sweden, Bantama and other parts of the globe, as well as other tribal groups, also paid homage to the King.
In her remarks, the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Montrat, expressed appreciation to Otumfuo for gracing the event and blessing Canada with his presence.
“Your presence in Toronto is a testament to the enduring bond between Canada and Ghana, between tradition and progress, between our shared values and our shared future. We extend our deepest appreciation to His Majesty,” she said.
She affirmed that Sankofa Square was the perfect place for the Ghana Sports Village.
“The Akan principle of Sankofa teaches us to look back and retrieve what is valuable, to honour our roots, learn from our history and carry that wisdom forward. This square is more than a place in the heart of Toronto. It is a bridge between generations, a meeting place of culture and a symbol of true friendship between Ghana and Canada.”
Planting Culture
Opening the Village, the Asantehene said Ghana was planting the rich vibrancy of Ghanaian culture firmly into the fertile soil of Canada.
“We are building a sanctuary. This village stands as a beacon of Ghanaian unity, a place where our tradition thrives and a home away from home for our Ghanaian diaspora.”
Culture and Sports
In his address, Otumfuo stated that sports and culture have unique, divine power. He described them as great unifiers that transcend borders, languages and backgrounds, bringing people together under one umbrella of excellence.
“Sports and culture break down borders, unite historical adversaries and heal divisions,” he added.
Black Stars Message
The Asantehene used the occasion to remind the Black Stars of their mandate as they faced Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
“As our beloved Black Stars prepare to take the pitch today against Panama, this place stands as a symbol of our collective heartbeat. The eyes of the world are on Toronto, and the pride of our nation rests on the shoulders of the Black Stars.”
Open for Business
Beyond the excitement for the Black Stars, the King said the gathering represents a deepening bilateral relationship between Ghana and Canada.
“Ghana is open for business, open for tourism, and open for collaboration. We invite our Canadian friends to experience the warmth of our heritage through the music, textiles and arts displayed in the village.”
Preserving Identity
In a message to the Ghanaian diaspora, the Asantehene described them as Ghanaian ambassadors and encouraged them to uphold their cultural identity.
His Majesty urged them to pass on their cultural identity to their children.
“You carry the resilience, the intellect, and the warm hospitality in your daily lives. Do not lose your identity. Teach your children our language, customs and values. This village is a home away from home — a place to gather and cheer, and to remember who you are.”
Appreciation
His Majesty also thanked Canada for the serene environment that supports thriving communities.
Otumfuo expressed appreciation to the Canada-Ghana Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana for making his trip to Canada possible.
