NHIA Ramps Up Awareness on Antenatal, Maternal Health to Reduce Maternal, Infant Mortality

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has intensified public education on antenatal and maternal healthcare services covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme as part of efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality in Ghana.
The awareness drive is being led by the NHIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, Provider and Client Relations team through working visits to selected major credentialled healthcare facilities across the country.
The outreach commenced at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital in Mampong, in the Akuapem North District of the Eastern Region. It was led by the Acting Deputy Director for Corporate Affairs, Provider and Client Relations Unit, Ms Hamdiya Amadu Yakubu, with support from the NHIS Akuapem North District Office management.
Speaking during the visit, Ms Yakubu said the exercise aims to promote early and regular antenatal visits, birth preparedness, and the recognition of danger signs during pregnancy to ensure safe delivery for both mother and child.
She emphasised that proactive community engagement on antenatal care and maternal health is vital for reducing maternal and infant mortality and for ensuring that NHIS subscribers fully understand and access the maternal healthcare benefits available to them.
“Proactive community engagement on antenatal care and maternal health is vital for reducing maternal and infant mortality,” she stated.
The Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Kofi Ablorh, commended the NHIA team for the visit and the discussions, which also focused on rebuilding public trust in the NHIS.
The NHIA says the campaign will continue in other health facilities as part of its commitment to improving maternal healthcare delivery and ensuring that more women and children benefit from services covered under the Scheme.
