FDA Confiscates Fish Processed Under Unhygienic Conditions in Tema, Steps Up Public Education

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confiscated smoked and salted fish processed under unhygienic conditions in Tema following a viral video, and says it will intensify education and enforcement to safeguard public health.
In a statement, the FDA said its attention was drawn to the video showing individuals processing fish under unsanitary conditions.
A rapid response team from the FDA was dispatched to the scene on Monday, July 27, 2026, in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the Ghana Police Service.
The team assessed the situation and took three immediate actions. The fish exposed to unhygienic conditions were confiscated. The fish processors were also educated on the public health risks associated with such practices.
The FDA added that it will subsequently engage fish processors and fishmongers in the identified coastal districts on good hygienic practices to safeguard public health and safety.
The Authority advised the public to purchase smoked and dried fish only from reputable and hygienic sources.
It also urged consumers to carefully inspect fish before purchase and avoid those that appear contaminated, have an offensive odour, unusual colour, or signs of spoilage.
“Wash smoked or dried fish thoroughly before cooking and ensure it is cooked adequately before consumption,” the FDA said.
The public is further advised to report any suspected unhygienic food processing, storage, or sale to the nearest FDA office or local assembly.
“The FDA assures the public that together with the collaborating agencies, unsafe fish and fish products will be removed from the market. Education and enforcement activities would also be strengthened,” the statement added.
