Gov’t Activates Consular Measures for Ghanaians in Middle East Amid Regional Tensions

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the activation of precautionary consular measures for Ghanaians in the Middle East and is closely monitoring distressed cases in Jordan and Iraq following the recent conflict situation in the region.

At a presser, he said the measures are being coordinated through Ghana’s diplomatic Missions in the affected countries.

“Arising out of the conflict situation in the Middle East and in recognition of the potential implications for Ghanaian nationals, the Ministry has activated precautionary consular measures for nationals in the region through Ghana’s diplomatic Missions,” he said.

Hon. Ablakwa noted that the Ministry is presently following some distressed incidents in Jordan and Iraq closely. He added that Government is in consultation with the relevant Jordanian and Iraqi authorities, diplomatic partners, and international organisations to address the concerns of affected nationals.

According to the Minister, some Ghanaian nationals in Jordan have expressed interest in returning home, while many others have indicated that they wish to remain and continue their lawful employment.

“Government respects the individual decisions of nationals and will maintain an updated contact list of Ghanaian nationals, who will be regularly contacted to ensure readiness for emergency response at short notice should that be required,” he stated.

He clarified that at this stage, no large-scale evacuation is planned for Jordan or Iraq.

Hon. Ablakwa underscored the importance of registration, saying recent consular experiences show why all Ghanaian citizens travelling abroad must register with the respective Ghana Embassies or High Commissions as contained in the passport.

“When we maintain accurate registers of Ghanaian citizens abroad, crisis response is strengthened, and Ghana Missions are equipped to respond rapidly and effectively to any humanitarian or security emergency,” he said.

The Minister assured that Government will continue to enhance the emergency preparedness of Ghana Missions through improved communication systems, regular contingency planning, and closer cooperation with international partners.
