NHIA Kick-starts Free Registration, Waiting Period Waiver to Mark Otumfuo’s Birthday

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has launched a free registration exercise for one million Ghanaians, along with a waiver of the waiting period for new enrollees.

Themed “May – The King’s Month”, the initiative will run throughout May 2026 in honour of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on the occasion of his 76th birthday.

When briefing Otumfuo about the project last month, NHIA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe said the initiative was inspired by His Majesty’s commitment to the well-being of Asanteman and all Ghanaians.

“We intend to support this ambition of Otumfuo by strengthening the healthcare system through this initiative,” Dr. Bampoe said.

The exercise is taking place across the Ashanti Region and was officially launched at the Manhyia Palace.

Satellite exercises are taking place at the palaces of paramount and selected sub-chiefs, including those at Tepa, Agona, and Asante Mampong.

Prospective registrants can also visit any NHIA office nationwide to register at no cost.

“Anyone residing in the region, or visiting it during May, will be eligible for this privilege,” an NHIA official told Opemsuo Radio during an interview on the M’asem show.

Members of the public can also dial 929# and follow the prompts to register or renew their membership.
