Helicopter Crash: Chief of Defence Staff Explains Use of Cocoa Sacks Instead of Body Bags

The Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. William Agyapong, has explained why cocoa sacks, rather than body bags, were used to convey victims of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter crash at the scene.
Addressing the press, he said the remains were too hot to be conveyed in plastic bags, which were available.
Contrary to reports that there were no available body bags, he said, “We had some body bags at the scene, but the remains were so heated that it was not conducive for the bags to be used.”
“It was in the thick forest, and it was getting late. We had the option of leaving our remains there till the following day, and we know what would have happened in our absence. The team that was up there, assessing the situation, decided to use the available materials they had to start to descend the high ground.”
According to him, the bodies were transferred into the body bags after descending the hill.
“At the foot of the hill, they met the medical team and with the body bags they had, some of which had also been sent from AngloGold Ashanti, we kept our fallen heroes in those bags decently.”
It comes after public outcry over the use of sacks instead of body bags for the eight compatriots who died in the crash on August 6, 2025.
