Mahama Unveils Cenotaph in Honour of Late Defence Minister Omane Boamah

The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled a cenotaph in memory of the late Honourable Dr (Med) Edward Kofi Omane Boamah at the forecourt of the Ministry of Defence, Accra.

The ceremony on Thursday, August 6, 2026, brought together Senior Government Officials, the Military High Command, members of the Diplomatic Corps and family members to honour the late Defence Minister’s legacy of dedicated public service and contributions to the development of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Delivering the keynote address, President Mahama said the cenotaph was a reaffirmation of the nation’s gratitude to a devoted patriot whose life was dedicated to service.

He noted that Dr Omane Boamah’s commitment to national development and strengthening the GAF would continue to inspire future generations.

The Acting Minister for Defence and Minister for Finance, Honourable Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, paid tribute to the late minister, describing him as a selfless leader whose service left a lasting impact on Ghana’s defence sector.

He also launched the maiden special edition of THE DEFENDER magazine, dedicated to preserving Dr Omane Boamah’s legacy.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic candle-lighting by President Mahama and the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, on behalf of the people of Ghana and the Ghana Armed Forces respectively.

Among the dignitaries present were the Vice President, Her Excellency Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, members of the Diplomatic Corps and a delegation from the Government of Burkina Faso.
