There’s No Basis to Destool Aboabogyahene – Otumfuo
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has ruled that there is no basis to destool the Chief of Aboabogya, Nana Wiafe Akenten Amoah II, and has ordered that the matter be resolved indoors.
Speaking during the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on Thursday, August 6, 2026, Otumfuo described the dispute between the chief, Queen Oheneyere Birago Domfe II, and family head Kwadwo Agyei as “just a misunderstanding.”
“After hearing the charges, they have no basis for destoolment. I will meet you, my wife, Abusuapanin, Gyaasehene, Abontendomhene, and Okyeame,” His Majesty directed.
Otumfuo further charged the Amakomhene to take charge of Aboabogya and guide the chief in his affairs. He also cautioned Nana Akenten over his quick temper and use of firearms.
“Is resorting to the use of guns the way to go when you feel you are alone? You invoke the Golden Stool? I am here. You should have reported your grievances to me and not take matters into your hands. Your quick temper puts you at a disadvantage,” he said.
The Asantehene noted that cases involving his wives are not heard publicly but indoors. He called for unity within the family, emphasising that their small size demands bonding, not division.
Allegations and Defence
The charges were presented by the Abusuapanin on behalf of Oheneyere, who was absent in accordance with tradition. The chief was accused of invoking the powers of the Golden Stool and other deities to kill the queen and other royals opposed to him.
He was also accused of contracting people to kill Oheneyere and personally firing gunshots at her during a clandestine visit to the Aboabogya palace to retrieve some cloths. Other allegations included destroying the Queen’s traditional stool, indiscriminate land sales, and employing landguards.
In his defence, Nana Akenten dismissed the attempt-to-kill claims. He said some persons allegedly contracted by the Queen to kill him rather confessed and demanded plots of land, which he granted.
“The men sold the land and bought motorcycles which they parade through the town. That is what they are referring to as landguards. They brought them,” he stated.
He further accused the queen of selling 450 plots of land without his consent and squandering other plots allotted to her for her upkeep.
Admitting to invoking the powers of the Golden Stool, the chief said it followed incessant rituals by a son of the Queen and his wife who live in the palace.
“Their actions caused my younger mother to faint. In my distress, I invoked the powers of the Golden Stool to deal with those behind the act. I also fired warning shots. I didn’t aim at anyone. The police arrested me but later released me after reviewing CCTV footage,” he said.
Nana Akenten also lamented a lack of appreciation for his support to the family since his enstoolment, and accused the family head, who resides in Holland, of teaming up with the Queen against him.
