Asantehene to Resolve Lingering Aboabogya Dispute Indoors
The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has decided to resolve the lingering and longstanding misunderstanding between the Chief of Aboabogya, Nana Wiafe Akenten Amoah II, Oheneyere Birago Domfe II, and the family head Kwadwo Agyei.
The decision was taken after Otumfuo heard charges levelled against the chief by the Queen and the Abusuapanin, as well as the chief’s defence during the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on August 6, 2026.
Charges
Speaking on behalf of Oheneyere, who was absent in accordance with tradition, the Abusuapanin accused the chief of invoking the powers of the Golden Stool and other deities to kill her and other royals who are against him.
He was also accused of contracting people to kill Oheneyere and personally firing gunshots in an attempt to kill her when she once visited the Aboabogya palace, where she had clandestinely gone to get some cloths.
He was further accused of destroying the Queen’s traditional stool, as well as the indiscriminate sale of land and the employment of the services of land guards.
Defence
While he dismissed claims of an attempt to kill oheneyere, Nana Akenten noted that some persons contracted by the Queen to kill him rather turned around to confess to him and demanded plots of land in exchange, which he granted.
“The men sold the land and bought motorcycles which they parade through the town. That is what they are referring to as landguards. They brought them,” he said.
He also accused the queen of selling 450 plots of land without his consent and squandering other plots of land allotted to her for her upkeep.
Admitting to invoking the powers of the Golden Stool against the Queen, Nana Akenten said it followed incessant rituals by a son of the Queen and his wife who live in the palace.
“Their actions caused my younger mother to faint. In my distress, I invoked the powers of the Golden Stool to deal with those behind the act. I also took out my gun and fired warning shots. I didn’t aim at anyone. The police arrested me but later released me after reviewing CCTV footage,” he stated.
Nana Akenten used the occasion to outline his support for the family since his enstoolment, condemning the lack of appreciation for these efforts.
“The family head resides in Holland and stands here to accuse me with hearsay. He has teamed up with the Queen against me. I am alone with no one,” he lamented.
Criticism and Resolution
Otumfuo criticised the chief for his quick temper and use of guns.
“Is resorting to the use of guns the way to go when you feel you are alone? You invoke the Golden Stool? I am here. You should have reported your grievances to me and not taken matters into your hands. Your quick temper puts you at a disadvantage,” he said.
His Majesty called for unity within the family, emphasising that their small nature demands bonding, not separation.
He further noted that cases involving his wives are not heard publicly but indoors.
“After hearing the charges, the issue is just a misunderstanding. They have no basis for destoolment. I will meet you, my wife, Abusuapanin, Gyaasehene, Abontendomhene, and Okyeame,” he directed.
Otumfuo further charged the Amakomhene to take charge of Aboabogya and direct him in his affairs.
