Woman Gets 3-Year Jail Term for Abducting 8-Month-Old Baby

A 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, has been given three years’ imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.

Amedzorme was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026 and remanded into police custody.

She reappeared before the Court on August 3, 2026, pleaded guilty to the offence, and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

Background
In a press release dated Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the Volta Regional Command said the case was reported on July 17, 2026, by the baby’s mother, 21-year-old Gloria Xagbe.

She told police she had briefly left her son in the care of the convict, a fellow market trader, while she went to buy packaging bags.

“On her return, both the convict and the baby were missing,” the statement said.

Acting on intelligence, police arrested Stella Amedzorme on July 18, 2026, at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and rescued the child.

The baby was rescued unharmed following a swift intelligence-led operation and reunited with the mother.

During investigations, the convict admitted she took the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently at large.

The Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to protecting lives, especially children, and is urging parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
