Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College Admits First Cohort for Specialised Nursing Programmes

The Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College has admitted its first cohort of students into new Specialised Nursing Programmes, in what officials describe as a landmark step to strengthen Ghana’s specialist healthcare workforce.

The maiden matriculation ceremony was held on July 6, 2026, and was attended by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Frank Amoakohene, and the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

Addressing the pioneer students, Mr Amoakohene said being first comes with a unique responsibility.

“Pioneers are remembered not simply because they came first, but because they establish the standards of excellence, professionalism, innovation, integrity, and compassion for all who follow,” he stated.

He also emphasised the growing need for specialisation in healthcare, noting that technology and artificial intelligence are transforming the sector.

“The future belongs to professionals who possess deep expertise and can deliver advanced, patient-centred care,” the Regional Minister added.

Mr Amoakohene expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Health for selecting the Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to pioneer the programmes.

He noted that the initiative is being supported through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, which is investing in both specialist training and healthcare delivery.

The Regional Minister further linked the new programme to ongoing health sector investments in the Ashanti Region.

These include the construction of the KATH Cath Lab, the completion and operationalisation of Sewua Hospital, the completion of Trede and Oforikrom Hospitals, the ongoing construction of the KNUST Medical Centre, and the expansion of primary healthcare through new CHPS compounds and health centres across the region.

Also present at the ceremony were the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr Paa Kwasi Baidoo, and the Board Chairman of the Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Mr Marvin Norman Fraizer.

“Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient healthcare system for Ghana, one that is powered by world-class infrastructure, highly specialised professionals, and a shared commitment to excellence,” Mr Amoakohene said.

The Specialised Nursing Programmes are expected to produce advanced practitioners to support tertiary healthcare facilities in the region and beyond.
