Kotoko IMC Chair Disappointed in Police Officers’ ‘Nonchalant’ Behaviour During Nsoatre Stabbing Incident

The Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of Asante Kotoko, Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua has expressed disappointment in some on-duty police officers who appeared unperturbed about the stabbing of a Kotoko supporter at Nsoatre over the weekend.

During a meeting between the IMC, Kotoko supporters, leadership and the police officers led by the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare, the traditional authority called for an investigation into conduct of the officers.

“One thing I was disappointed about was how your men on the ground reacted. When the incident happened, and the deceased lay on the floor, our supporters were crying for help. You could spot some officers with guns around in some of the videos that went viral. One of the officers was captured in one video just looking on.”

“I thought they were supposed to provide security- let’s hold on with the number of security officers that were deployed- the attitude displayed by the officers on the ground at the time is one thing I would like you to take up,” he told the IGP on February 4 at the Secretariat of the Club.

He called for steps to be taken to forestall recurrence.

“The incident has already happened but we need to take steps so that they know they are deployed to such venues for a purpose to save lives and not as supporters.”

The IGP promised to take the matter up for the necessary action.

“We will take it up so that we work to the satisfaction of Ghanaians as we intend to set the pace with our institution in Ghana and Africa.”

He also encouraged the public to report all unprofessional conduct of personnel.

“We are there because of you. We will investigate all shortcomings.”

Ardent Asante Kotoko fan, Frimpong Yaw Francis, popularly known as Nana Pooley, was stabbed to death following the 1-0 defeat to Nsoatreman FC.

This followed a melee that marred the game at Nana Koramansah Park at Nsoatre in the Bono Region on February 2, 2025.

He died at a hospital while receiving treatment, Kotoko confirmed in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Porcupines alongside four players have been charged for failing to control players and anti-footballing activities respectively during the game.

Kotoko have since suspended all footballing activities until further notice.
