KATH: Ashanti Regional Minister Appeals for End to Industrial Action

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has made an appeal in a move to de-escalate tensions at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
In a statement following the meeting held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) expressed appreciation on behalf of the President of the Republic and the Minister for Health for what he described as “forthright, constructive, and insightful discussions” with the unions.
The ARCC said it has taken notice of all concerns raised by the unions and has commenced engagements with the Ministry of Health and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate an amicable resolution.
“As discussed during the meeting, the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate will continue to support KATH by coordinating the transfer, or reverse referral, and management of stabilised patients to appropriate secondary-level health facilities across the region,” the statement said.
The intervention is intended to provide immediate relief and ensure continuity of care while efforts are made to resolve the issues within a week.
The ARCC reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in the region.
It noted that work is ongoing toward the completion and operationalisation of Sewua, Afari, Oforikrom, and Trede Hospitals in the immediate term.
Progress on the Cath Lab Facility is also said to be advancing steadily to enhance specialist care and improve patient outcomes.
It thereby appealed to leadership and members to end their strike.
“We respectfully appeal and pray to the leadership and membership of the unions to call off the industrial action and resume normal services. This will help ensure that patients, their families, and the wider region do not suffer avoidable hardship or loss,” the Council stated.
It stressed that its intervention is “not to apportion blame but rather to restore the operations of KATH to normality and to improve the existing situation.”
The ARCC assured the public of its commitment to work closely with the Ministry of Health and all stakeholders to secure a swift, fair, and lasting resolution and restore calm within the health sector.
The unions declared a strike following the suspension of the CEO of KATH over a decision to suspend the admission at the Accident and Emergency Centre for 24 hours over congestion.
