KMA Demolishes 500 Structures in Bayakasua Slum to Restore Sanitation and Security

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Wednesday carried out a major demolition exercise at the Bayakasua slum behind the COCOBOD building, pulling down about 500 unauthorised wooden structures as part of efforts to improve sanitation, public safety and restore order in the city.

The operation, led by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, began at 6:30 a.m. and was conducted with support from personnel of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, Metro Guards, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and Ghana Water Limited.

According to KMA, the Bayakasua settlement had long been associated with criminal activities including the sale and abuse of illicit drugs, robbery, prostitution, and illegal utility connections.

As part of the exercise, ECG retrieved about 100 illegally connected electricity meters. Ghana Water Limited also disconnected illegal water connections and repaired damaged pipelines in the area.

Officials said the demolition was carried out peacefully with no casualties or resistance from occupants.

KMA said the exercise forms part of a broader drive to reclaim public lands, enforce planning regulations, protect public infrastructure, and improve environmental sanitation in Kumasi.

“The Assembly remains committed to creating a safer, cleaner, and more orderly Kumasi for all,” the statement added.

The Assembly is expected to continue with similar enforcement actions in other areas identified as public safety and sanitation risks across the metropolis.
